Sheet C-05Comparison · the free stack
MeMachine vs doing it yourself
Ads Manager is free. CapCut and Canva cost about the price of two coffees. Every part of what MeMachine does can be assembled by hand. The question is not whether you could. It is whether you will.
Tool pricing checked August 2026 · third-party figures where noted
This is the comparison we lose on price by the widest margin, and it is also the one we are most comfortable making.
What the DIY stack actually is
- Meta Ads Manager — free. Meta’s own tool for building, targeting, budgeting and measuring campaigns across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network. There is no platform fee; you pay only your budget. It is genuinely capable software.
- Meta Ad Library — free. Every ad currently running, searchable by advertiser. This is a real research tool and anybody can use it.
- CapCut. Editing, captions, templates. The tiers were recently restructured, with the old Pro tier renamed Standard at around $10/mo and a new Pro tier at around $20/mo, cheaper annually and more through app stores. Reported figures vary — check current pricing.
- Canva. Design, thumbnails, static creative. Widely reported around $15/mo or $120/yr for Pro, with figures varying by region and billing cycle.
- Boost Post. The one-tap button in the Facebook app. Independent tests summarised across 2026 have reported a boost costing meaningfully more per result than a properly built Ads Manager campaign for lead and sales objectives — directional, not gospel, but consistent enough to be worth knowing.
Software total: roughly nothing to about thirty-five dollars a month. That is the honest number, and it is a lot less than $149.
nobody stalls because canva was too expensive.
What the DIY stack does not include
The tools are not the missing piece. Here is what you are actually assembling when you do this yourself:
- Deciding what to say. No editor writes your positioning. This is where most owners stop, and they stop quietly — not with a decision, just with a week going by.
- The market read. The Ad Library is free, but reading forty competitors’ live ads and finding the claim nobody is making is an afternoon of work you will do once and never repeat.
- Getting on camera. There is no teleprompter in CapCut telling you where to look, and no one telling you the third take was the good one.
- Finishing. Rough cut, cutaways, captions, aspect ratios, exports. Each step is easy. All of them together is why the footage is still on your phone.
- Actually shipping it. Campaign structure, audiences, budgets, conversion setup. Free software, non-trivial skill.
- Doing it again next month. The one that kills most DIY efforts.
Side by side
| Line item | Do it yourself | MeMachine |
|---|---|---|
| Software cost | $0–$35/mo, depending on which editors you pay for | $149/mo, one plan |
| Your time | Unbounded, and mostly spent deciding rather than doing | Twenty minutes talking. Ten minutes to film one ad, about an hour for all six |
| Knowing what to say | Yours to figure out | Pulled out of you in a recorded conversation |
| Market research | Free via Meta Ad Library, if you do it | Done for your market and niche, aimed at the gap |
| Filming | You, alone, with your phone propped on a paint can | Teleprompter, framing guides, retakes |
| Editing | CapCut — capable, and a skill you have to learn | Automatic rough cut, cutaways, captions |
| Publishing | Ads Manager, free, if you learn it — or Boost Post, which is easier and reportedly costlier per result | Into your own ad account, by the system |
| Bookings | Whatever you wire up | Onto your calendar |
| Ad spend | Direct to Meta — nobody in between | Direct to Meta, on your own ad account |
| Fails when | Week three, quietly | You will not go on camera |

One honest detour: if all you need is help filming
There are dedicated own-face video tools that do teleprompter, auto-captions and social publishing for far less than we charge — BIGVU, for instance, published paid tiers starting around $12–$19 a month as of August 2026. If your real problem is “I want to film myself talking and post it,” that is a better purchase than MeMachine and you should make it.
What those tools do not do is read the ads running in your market, aim your scripts at the gap, build the campaign, publish it as a paid ad in your own ad account, or route the response to your calendar. They are video tools. MeMachine is an ads system that happens to include filming. Different purchase, and worth knowing which one you are actually making.
Choose honestly
You have the time, and you have done it before.
- You already know what your ads should say and why.
- You are comfortable in Ads Manager, or willing to learn it properly.
- You have edited video before and did not hate it.
- Your ad budget is small enough that $149 is a meaningful share of it.
- You enjoy this part. Some owners genuinely do, and they should keep it.
You have started this three times already.
- There is footage on your phone from a month ago that never became anything.
- You do not know what to say, and that is the honest blocker.
- Boost Post is what you have been doing and you suspect it is not working.
- You want the whole loop — script, film, cut, publish, book — to just happen.
- Your hour is worth more than the difference between $35 and $149.
Seven days to find out.
MeMachine is in beta — your first month is free, full access, by application. If it turns out you would rather do it yourself, you will at least have seen six scripts and a read of your market.
